Solar Power Disadvantages

Even though I believe that the solar power disadvantages are far outweighed by the advantages, there are some that are worth noting which will help you determine if a solar power system is right for you.

There are also ways to offset some of these disadvantages which can make solar power technology a much more viable option.

High End Systems

Currently, one of the biggest solar power disadvantages is the unaffordable costs of buying and installing many of the systems.  The cost of some of these solar power technologies ranges in the thousands to tens of thousands of dollars to purchase the equipment and install it for your home. Even with the monthly cost savings to your electric bill, it can take years to recoup the invested costs of the system.

Also, just like with any industry there will be professionals who try to take advantage of those who are less knowledgeable about solar energy. They will try to talk you into purchasing a system that is bigger and more powerful than you really need.

But the good news is that these solar power disadvantages can be easily avoided. By learning how to make your own solar panels and system, you can learn all about solar power technology while saving a considerable amount of money in the process.

This way, you can continue to expand and improve your own homemade solar power system by making and adding additional solar panels. Or if you choose to work with a professional, you will have the knowledge to get the most from your money without getting ripped off.

Excess Energy Storage

Another one of the solar power disadvantages is that it is difficult to store excess solar energy, especially if you are not grid tied. As you know, solar power is only produced when the sun is shining. So if you want to produce enough power to hold you over during the night then you need a way of storing the power for night use.

If you are not already tied to the power grid, then this can result in the need for expensive batteries. This is a major shortcoming for countries that do not use power grid systems.

However, if you are grid tied to an electric company then you do not have to worry. The power grid acts as your battery. Any excess power you generate is sent to your electric company who credits you for the power. Then at night, you simply reuse that same power you sent to the electric company earlier that day without having to pay for it.

Lack of Incentive

One of the other major solar power disadvantages is that there isn’t enough incentive to invest in large solar power systems. Sure, there are solar tax credits and solar power rebates which are nice but there should be long term incentives for those who generate more power than they use.

As I discussed above, the power company will credit you for your excess power however by state mandate, they will not pay you for it. If you could actually get paid to sell your excess power then there would be much more incentive to build better and more efficient solar power technologies. The industry would see an even greater advancement and at a faster rate.

As you can see, there are some solar power disadvantages that are holding it back from becoming a much more widely and dependable alternative energy source. But, as I have shown, there are many ways to help offset these disadvantages.

If you are not sure if solar power is right for you or you are a solar power beginner, then take advantage of the great online resources available to you. There are many inexpensive online books (ebooks) available that will teach you everything you need to know about solar power systems and how to build them yourself. But don’t let any of these over hyped solar power disadvantages stop you from taking advantage of the many amazing benefits.
