If you are interested in learning how to install solar panels or even building your own solar panels, then there are many great resources available.

Here we will discuss the important aspects but I often suggest beginners start with an inexpensive online book (ebook) and video instruction that can walk you through the process every step of the way.

How to Install Solar Panels – Mounting Location

In most cases of home solar power, the panels are mounted directly to the roof of the home. But in some cases it might be preferred to use a standalone mounting structure.

The first thing to consider when choosing a location is how much access the solar panel will have to direct sunlight. You want to choose a location that gets direct sunlight and for as long as possible throughout the day.

If you live in the northern hemisphere then it is best to orient the panels to the south for best sun exposure. If this is not possible, then the next best orientation would be to the east or west although they will not work as efficiently. It is a good rule of thumb to not face the panels north unless you live in the southern hemisphere which would reverse the desired orientation.

How to Install Solar Panels – Mounting

For a solar panel roof installation, the panels should be mounted to the roof using pre-made mounting hardware.

It is best to mount the panels directly to a rafter whenever possible to ensure a solid foundation. Otherwise, the panel can be mounted to wood blocks inserted between the rafters. Under no circumstance should the panel be mounted directly to the plywood sheathing of the roof.

It is often times helpful to use a stud finder to locate the rafter and a chalk line or laser level to ensure that your mountings are straight. Continue the installation by securing the mounts to the roof making sure to take the necessary precautions to prevent leaks.

Once the mounts are in place, you can secure the metal railing and finish the mounting installation by connecting the racks to the metal railing. Be sure to leave at least a 3 inch gap between the panel and the roofing to ensure adequate airflow.

Once the mounting hardware is secure, you can continue to attach the solar panel itself. The solar panels will be supplied with restraining hardware that you will use to secure the panels.  Ensure that the solar panels are anchored securely to the roof. If you have multiple panels, you can interconnect the panels at this time.

How to Install Solar Panels – Solar Panel Tilt

You should always tilt your solar panel installation to receive the most sunlight possible. The general rule of thumb is that the degree of tilt should equal the latitude of your location with -15 degrees in the summer and +15 degrees in the winter. However, it should be noted that you can actually achieve better than this but it is beyond the scope of this article.

Now that you know how to install solar panels, you can get started on your own solar energy installation. If these instructions seem at all intimidating then do not worry because it is easier than you think.

Just follow the step by step instructions provided in one of the recommended ebooks and there will be no guesswork involved. You will be well on your way to saving money using this alternative energy source in no time.
