Alternative Energy Projects

Others do them for more earth friendly reasons like helping to reduce the number of fossil fuels that we use because of the damaging effects they have on the environment. The truth about the environmental damage from the use of fossil fuels is becoming more public every day with widespread media such as Al Gore’s documentary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.

The main problem with fossil fuel plants is that they release concentrated amounts of carbon dioxide into the air in the amounts of several billion tons every single year. This alone has a huge effect on global warming and climate change.

But by starting your own project you will be playing a part in reversing the damage and changing the future for the better. So not only are they fun and exciting, they are supporting one of the best causes possible.

Project Ideas

There are all kinds of alternative energy projects available to you with a wide range of difficulties. You can start by learning how to make solar panels using easy to get materials directly from your local hardware store.

There are many online books (ebooks) available that will help you every step of the way with many different projects. But here I will cover a simplistic view of building solar panels. If you want to take it further, I suggest getting your hands on one of the ebook tutorials.

Solar Panel

You can start by purchasing 36 solar cells that when connected in series will produce an 18 volt solar panel. These can be purchased at some hardware stores as well as from online auction sites such as Ebay.

The panel hardware can be purchased from most hardware stores or you can build your own solar panel housing. But make sure to store the solar cells in a safe place prior to using them as they are fragile and can be easily broken.

If you are building your own solar panel housing, then you can start with a simple wooden frame with a raised border. Measure the required dimensions carefully to ensure that the solar cells will fit nicely.

Your panel will need to be protected by installing a glass or plastic cover. Solder the cells in series and attach them to the panel housing. You have now completed your first of many alternative energy projects.

Wind Turbine

Other fun and easy alternative energy projects include building a windmill or wind turbine. This involves purchasing a motor and mounting the turbine blades to the motor. Attach the constructed turbine to a support structure and watch it spin with the wind.

This is an easy and great way to utilize wind power. And unlike solar power which is only produced during the day, your wind turbine will supply power at all times of the day for as long as the wind is blowing.

These are only two simple examples of alternative energy projects but there are many more. Start your first project today and start seeing how something so simple can have such a positive impact on the environment while putting some extra spending cash in your wallet.
